Are you ready to move beyond the failed model of traditional investment advice? Are you exhausted by conflicting reports coming from “reliable” sources?

At R|W we believe traditional investment advice is based in the following illusions:

Market Timing

The idea that to be a successful investor, you need to know when to get into the market and when to get out. Repeat.

Investment Selection

The belief that to be a successful investor, you simply need to identify the next Google or Apple. Repeat.

The fruitless pursuit of these illusions, constantly advocated by the media, creates a short-term mindset and inevitably leads to emotional decision making.

Entertainment is often confused for advice. At R|W our experienced advisors counsel clients to “Ignore the financial news media and focus on what is important.”

What is truly Important: Debt Reduction, Retirement Planning, Funding Education, Charitable Giving.

Because if we had been relying on inflammatory journalism for our investment advice in January 2016, we would have experienced the financial news machine wanting desperately to convince us that a major economic crisis was imminent.

The worst start to a year…. EVER!

January 2016 Headlines from major publications screamed:

“Dow has worst four-day start to a year on record”
– CNN Money

“U.S. stocks post worst 10-day start to a year in history”
– Marketwatch

“Bad January a bad omen for stocks in 2016?”
– Chicago Tribune

Within 90 days, markets had fully recovered and moved on to new all-time highs.

June 2016 the media foolishly predicted a ‘Remain’ vote in the United Kingdom, and were subsequently dumfounded when ‘Brexit’ carried the day. The pundits proclaimed that global markets were doomed. Investors were accosted with the following:

“Turbulence and Uncertainty for the Market after ‘Brexit’”
– NY Times

“U.S. Stocks hammered as Brexit shock rocks markets”
– USA Today

The market fell about 5.5%, quickly recovered, and was again making new highs within 2 weeks.

As the calendar marched toward November of 2016 and the Presidential Election, the media predicted a Democrat election victory while at the same time threatening disaster for the markets if a Republican won. “Experts” were called upon for this round of the market prediction game, including ‘market analyst’ Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks and star of “Shark Tank”.

“Key model predicts big election win for Clinton”
– CNN Money

“A Trump win would ‘Likely cause the stock market to crash and plunge the world into recession.’”
– NY Times Dealbook quoting MIT Economist Simon Johnson

“Mark Cuban Predicts a Stock Market Crash if Trump Wins the White House”
– Fortune Magazine

Once again, the “experts” were wrong. Not only did the Republicans win, but the market ended the year up nearly 10%.

Can we agree that traditional sources of investment advice fail investors time and time again? The financial news media preys on our tender emotions and influences short-term decision making. Market Timing and Investment Selection are the absolute enemy of a family’s long term financial plan to reach their goal.

We believe there is a better way. We help our clients gracefully refuse to buy ticket on the rollercoaster and instead focus on what is important.

What is truly Important: Debt Reduction, Retirement Planning, Funding Education, Charitable Giving.

Consider the following truths:

  1. No one knows what events will transpire in the future
  2. No one knows how the market will react to those events.

Regarding future events there are no facts… just opinions.

A family’s investment strategy or financial goals based on short-term predictions regarding unknown future events is doomed to failure. This strategy will inevitably tempt the investor to engage in the Illusions of Market Timing and Investment Selection.

At R|W we know there is better way.

Our client investment experience is based on goal attainment, not prediction. Our process focuses on embracing the power of markets, not dodging bullets.

We will never make investment recommendation based on predictions or fear.

A successful long-term investment philosophy is built on these fundamental ideas:

  1. Planning is the key to any good investment strategy
  2. Own the whole market – Remain well-diversified
  3. Keep investment costs low and transparent
  4. Be tax efficient
  5. Make decisions based on research and evidence
  6. Allow the global markets work on our behalf
